John the Baptist and Elijah!

Question: What is the significance of Elizabeth being barren in Luke 1:7?

It follows a pattern of ‘special’ women in the Old Testament, who were barren as regards children.

In most cases that are recorded, the women and their husbands were subject to sincere prayer, for Almighty God to allow them to become pregnant.

In the case of Elizabeth; she eventually had a son, John “the Baptist”; who became the “forerunner” to Christ Jesus!

An interesting feature of John, was that as Jesus said of him; “had you been able, John could have been as Elijah”; Matt.17:11–13!

What that meant is that the prophecy of Malachi 4:5, could have transpired with Jesus returning soon afterwards!

As Israel rejected Jesus as Messiah at Acts 28:25–28 (Isa.6:9–10); He will not now return until the events of Zech.12:10; which will also complete the prophecy of Rom.11:25–27!
